Laminated Insulating Glass
Enhancing Glass Strength with PGT’s Proven Silicone Glazing Technique: PGT, a leading glass technology pioneer, utilizes a cutting-edge silicone glazing process to fortify glass, ensuring unparalleled durability and longevity. This technique has been meticulously developed and tested, proving its efficacy in strengthening laminated insulating glass windows.
The Science Behind PGT’s Silicone Glazing:
At the heart of PGT’s silicone glazing process lies advanced materials and precise engineering. PGT’s laminated glass is composed of three panes of glass. Two panes of glass are bonded together with a strong, clear interlayer, and this is for maximum impact resistance, and one additional pane of glass serves as the insulating layer. Here’s the best part; once sealed, PGT has created the perfect “glass sandwich,” designed to behave as a single transparent unit, just like ordinary glass.
Reinforced Glass:
Reinforced glass, a marvel of engineering, offers remarkable safety features and energy-efficient solutions for homes and commercial properties alike. When subjected to forceful impacts, this innovative glass undergoes a transformation that sets it apart from traditional options.
Tempered Glass:
When a tempered glass door or window is struck with considerable force, it breaks into countless small, slightly cube-shaped pieces, reducing the risk of cutting hazards.
The production process involves heating annealed glass to about 1300°F and then rapidly cooling it, resulting in higher surface compression.
This enhanced compression grants tempered glass superior resistance to blunt impacts and temperature fluctuations, making it approximately four to five times stronger than annealed glass. Consequently, it has earned the well-deserved moniker of “safety glass.”
Heat Strengthened Glass:
Heat-strengthened glass, on the other hand, breaks into medium-sized shards upon impact. Like tempered glass, it starts as annealed glass and undergoes a heating process up to 1300°F. The subsequent cooling process imparts surface compression, allowing the glass to withstand rapid and uneven temperature changes, rendering it about twice as strong as annealed glass.
Annealed Glass:
In its natural state, annealed glass may break into large shards upon impact. The annealed form is the initial stage after production, before undergoing further processes like heat strengthening or tempering. Once it has undergone these additional treatments, the glass will shatter if cut.
Impact Resistance:
The true strength of a quality reinforced glass lies in its impact resistance capabilities. PGT’s laminated glass and laminated insulating glass are specifically designed to endure repeated impacts from a nine-pound 2’ x 4’ beam traveling at an impressive 34 miles per hour. Even if damaged, the interlayer ensures the glass pieces stay securely in the frame, keeping unwanted elements outside. These reinforced glass options, coupled with heavy-duty frames, surpass the strictest code requirements for hurricane-force winds and flying debris. PGT takes great pride in the fact that their impact-resistant windows and doors exceed the 2010 Florida building code standards and boast additional certifications, such as Miami-Dade and AAMA.
